Geschiedenis

Hoe het ontstond

Founded in the 15th century as a fortified fishing settlement, Sveti Stefan was turned into an exclusive island resort in the 1950s — when the state resettled the last villagers on the mainland — and in its heyday drew stars like Sophia Loren and Elizabeth Taylor, all while keeping its historic stone-village form.

Goed om te weten

The islet itself is a private resort and not open to the public, but the classic viewpoints on the coast road and the public pink-sand Sveti Stefan Beach on the village side are open — and give the famous view (the Queen's Beach cove on the Miločer side is reserved for Aman resort guests). It is about 5 km south of Bečići.

It was founded in the 15th century as a fortified fishing settlement and, in the 1950s, was turned into an exclusive island resort that drew stars like Sophia Loren and Elizabeth Taylor, while keeping its historic stone-village form.

By car or bus along the coast road, about 5 km south — an easy half-day. The viewpoints and beaches stay open even though the island itself is private.
