Budva Old Town — the walkable one
About 3 km up the coast, Budva Old Town is the easiest trip of all: a walled medieval old town of marble lanes, churches and a seaward citadel. It's also one of the oldest towns on the Adriatic — settled some 2,500 years ago (first recorded in the 5th century BC as Butua) and, by legend, founded by Cadmus of Thebes, exiled here with his wife Harmonia, the couple said to have ended their days transformed into snakes on this shore. The old town is free to wander; the Citadela fortress costs around €5 for adults (children free, cash only; confirm at the gate) for its walls, small maritime museum and the best sea view. You can walk there along the seaside promenade, or take a short bus, taxi or summer boat. Half a day is plenty — pair it with a swim and a wander of the Riviera's liveliest town.
Sveti Stefan — the iconic islet
About 5 km south is Sveti Stefan, the fortified islet joined to the shore by a causeway — Montenegro's most photographed view, and the top shot in our best photo spots guide. The islet itself is a private resort, but the classic vista is from the coast road and the beaches just above it. A short drive, taxi or bus ride, and an easy half-day.
Petrovac — the quieter coast south
Carry on about 15 km south and the Riviera softens into Petrovac, a calmer, family-paced resort with a pine-backed sandy bay, a palm-lined promenade and none of Budva's noise. Above the water sits the little 16th-century Venetian fortress (the Kastio), and behind the church of St Ilija a glass pavilion shelters 4th-century Roman mosaics (usually open weekday mornings). Two islets — Katič and Sveta Nedjelja — float just offshore, reachable by boat or kayak from the front. It's the easy pick when you want a Riviera town without the crowds.
The Bay of Kotor & Perast — the UNESCO showpiece
Roughly 30–40 minutes up the coast (Kotor town is about 25 km; allow extra in peak-summer traffic, which builds around the bay), the UNESCO-listed Bay of Kotor is a fjord-like inlet ringed by mountains. Explore the walled city of Kotor — free to wander, though the climb up the city walls to the San Giovanni fortress costs €15 (cash only) when the booths are staffed, roughly April–October; it is generally free in winter and before/after staffed hours and rewards you with the classic view over the bay — and the baroque town of Perast, with boat trips out to the islands of Our Lady of the Rocks and St George.
