Sveti Stefan is the most photographed sight on the Budva Riviera — a fortified islet of stone houses and red roofs, joined to the mainland by a narrow isthmus, about 5 km south of Bečići. It's the image that sells Montenegro, and an easy half-day from the beach. Here's a guide to seeing it. For the wider coast, see our best day trips guide.
The story of the islet
Sveti Stefan was founded in the 15th century as a fortified fishing settlement, its stone houses packed tight behind defensive walls on the little island. In the 1950s it was turned into a luxury island resort — the state resettled the last villagers on the mainland — and in its heyday it drew stars like Sophia Loren and Elizabeth Taylor, all while keeping its historic stone-village form, which is exactly why it still looks so striking: a medieval silhouette turned into one of the Adriatic's most exclusive addresses. Run today by Aman, the resort closed in 2021 amid a dispute over public beach access and — after a settlement with the Montenegrin government — reopened for the 2026 summer season, with the island itself welcoming guests again from 1 July 2026.
What to see — and what's private
Here's the honest part: the islet itself is a private resort, so you can't just wander across the causeway. But the best of Sveti Stefan is the view and a public beach, both open to everyone:
- The iconic profile — the classic postcard shot is from the mainland viewpoints along the coast road above the isthmus.
- The pink-sand beach on the village side (Sveti Stefan Beach) is the spot for a swim with the islet framed across the water. Note that under the 2026 reopening deal the cove on the Miločer side, Queen's Beach, is reserved for Aman resort guests, while Sveti Stefan Beach and King's Beach stay open to the public.
How to get there
Sveti Stefan is about 5 km south of Bečići, reached by car or bus along the coast road — a short drive, taxi or bus ride. Park or get off near the viewpoints above the isthmus; from there it's a short walk down to the beaches. It pairs naturally with other Riviera beaches and sights on a day exploring south from Bečići.
Tips for visiting
- Come for the view and a swim, not to tour the island — the resort is private.
- The viewpoints from the coast road give the definitive photo; go in good light for the colours of the stone and roofs.
- Combine it with Budva old town to the north for a full day of Riviera sights — see our best day trips guide and practical info.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you visit Sveti Stefan island?
The islet itself is a private luxury resort, so you cannot walk across the causeway. But the mainland viewpoints and the public pink-sand beach on the village side (Sveti Stefan Beach) are open to everyone; the Queen's Beach cove on the Miločer side is reserved for Aman resort guests.
Is Sveti Stefan resort open in 2026?
Yes. The Aman-run resort had been closed since 2021 over a dispute about public beach access, but after a settlement with the Montenegrin government it reopened for the 2026 summer season — the mainland Villa Miločer from late May and the island of Sveti Stefan itself from 1 July 2026. The island stays a private resort, but the viewpoints and Sveti Stefan Beach remain open to visitors.

About 5 km south, reached by car, taxi or bus along the coast road — a short trip and an easy half-day.
Where is the best view of Sveti Stefan?
From the mainland viewpoints along the coast road above the isthmus — that is the classic postcard shot of the fortified islet.
